First Major Biglaw Firm Matches The 2021 Cravath Bonus Scale – One by one, the top Biglaw firms are committed to matching the existing salary scale, or posting competitive results. Today, one of the top 10 companies in the country informed its partners that they will soon see Cravath Cash in their bank accounts.

() – Compensation chiefs at New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore are raising associate salaries, a move that prompted a similar announcement from rivals on Thursday.

Another New York firm, Milbank, started the compensation battle last Thursday, when it increased the first-year pay for new and existing partners to $200,000. Davis Polk & Wardwell upped the ante on Friday, offering $202,500 to first-year entrants. Associates, Class of 2021, and $205,000 for current first-year Associates, Class of 2020.

Although firms including Chicago-based Baker McKenzie and Philadelphia-based Dechert have been quick to align with Davis Polk, New York’s largest firms have so far been more cautious.

Cravath is raising his colleagues’ first-year pay from $190,000 to $205,000. Legal industry blog Above the Law first reported the news Wednesday afternoon. The company declined to comment.

Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, went up soon after Cravath, according to internal records seen.

New York-based Willkie Farr & Gallagher said Thursday that the starting salary for the class of 2021 and the current class of 2020 first-year associates will be $205,000.

Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel increased Cravath’s salary for the class of 2020, according to internal records.

The company also increased the value of senior associates, but there was a difference in the year they received the highest rank. The Cravath scale ends at $350,000 for the 2014 class and Debevoise ends at $375,000 for the 2012 class and up.

Pay increases may not be enough to stem the flow of colleagues leaving New York’s top firms. They come as major law firms struggle to retain partners. Business volume remains high, the hiring market is hot and the coronavirus outbreak has increased the risk of burnout.
